About Rachel’s Practice
My art is more than just a practice for me, it’s a means of processing day to day life. I refer to my abstract compositions as meditations because that is how they function in my life. My big emotions lead me to the studio where I process those feelings in paint, charcoal, pastels and whatever other materials speak to me in the moment.
Each piece starts from a recognizable inspiration, typically the under-paintings of a landscape where I can set up a general layout. The pieces morph from there, changing with my state of mind. I let the previous marks I make inform my next, making deliberate marks and decisions based off of what compositionally makes sense rather than attempting to bring an image in my head to life. My work is messy and textured and no 2 pieces are ever the same.
These meditations are a departure from my classical training in oil painting. Thinking of art in such rigid guides never set well with me, which is why I took 3 years off of creating after earning my BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2018. I am so grateful for the space to create outside of rigid guidelines, and for the supportive community of artists who have encouraged me to get back to my passion.
Thank you for being a part of my journey.
